The Yevgeny Kushnaryov Foundation for democracy Initiatives Support was founded at the end of October 2007.
The Yevgeny Kushnaryov Foundation for Democracy Initiatives Support main areas of activity are:
to preserve the memory of Yevgeny Kushnaryov by fostering democratic ideas and values he had stood for;
to realize educational programmes in the area of democracy development;
to carry out memorial projects with an aim to eternize the memory of Yevgeny Kushnaryov;
to realize analytical programmes with an aim to monitor the development of democratic processes in Ukraine;
to support NGOs, young leaders and politicians that strive to develop civil society and democratic values;
to promote positive democratic experience.
In December 2007 with an international conference “Democratic Society. Tolerance and Social Responsibility” the Yevgeny Kushnaryov Foundation for Democracy Initiatives Support actually started its public work. Through the conference the Foundation claimed itself to be a platform for exchange of views, expert and professional discussions.
In May 2008 with the support of the Yevgeny Kushnaryov Foundation for Democracy Initiatives Support roundtable “Information Wars and International Public View. Professional Responsibility of Journalists” took place.
In September 2008 with the support of UNESCO, the Foundation carried out roundtable “Dialogue of Cultures and Modern Ukraine”. Around 50 representatives of different ethnic associations, analytical centres and also scientists, journalists and international experts participated in the event. Among the facilitators of the roundtable was Deputy Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information and Director of the Division for Freedom of Expression, Democracy and Peace at UNESCO. The event was supported by the members of Ukrainian Parliament and Presidential Commission on Culture and Spirituality.
Last year the Foundation supported the idea of a new publication of the collection of poems by Boris Chichibabin. Yevgeny Kushnaryov has always had a thoughtful attitude to everything that presents cultural and spiritual life of the city and its talents. His attitude towards Boris Chichibabin was special. The new publication is the most complete collection of poems by Boris Chichibabin. It is the first time when the book constitutes the manuscript collections of 1950's and the commentary to the poems. “Curious Politology” by Kharkiv political scientist Dmitry Gubin also came out with the support of the Foundation. The publication was further disseminated among the libraries of the Kharkiv Oblast in partnership with the Foundation of Leonid Kuchma, Ukraine’s former president.
In 2009, the Foundation supported the “Intercultural navigators” innovational international educational programme of the British Council in Ukraine. The aim of the project is to train young leaders to be culturally literate and to be capable of developing and managing projects. In September 2009 the Foundation became a co-organiser and sponsor of an international event within this programme. It was a round-up event in a training series for young activists from 17 countries of Europe.
In May 2009 the Yevgeny Kushnaryov Foundation carried out the First Contest for Young Sculptors and Architects of Kharkiv and Second Municipal Contest of PR-Projects.
The Journalists Day (5 July) was marked by a workshop for Kharkiv media “Covering Courts. The Peculiarities of Journalists’ Work with the Courts”. Among the subjects addressed at the workshop are the concept of court journalism and its genres; covering court procedures and human rights; public interest vs. privacy; the rights of victim and its relatives; the presumption of innocence and the boarders of media coverage; photographing and filming in the courtroom, ethical issues and other.
11 June 2009 with the support of the Foundation a workshop for NGO managers took place. The event was dedicated to the issues of effective cooperation between NGOs and donor organizations, fundraising for public activity of non-states and relations with the media.
